Ants Meet Armageddon
Helen cringed, as the monstrous ravens viciously shredded the roadkill, with their ebony dagger beaks. She knew it was a sign. She glanced around the park. No one else noticed, although the unusually large birds were in plain sight. Helen crossed her arms against the chilly wind, as she stood up from the park bench.
She wasn't surprised. The people were all blind to the evil that was growing like weeds around them. Although she realized that she was more sensitive than most, it always surprised her at how humans kept bouncing and bustling off the growing darkness around them.
Helen supposed they would keep going about their selfish lives until, like ants, the shadow of a shoe slowly closed in, crushing the juice from their frail bodies. It was inevitable and all she could do was try to warn them, the best way she could. Helen’s cell phone vibrated in her sweater pocket.
“Hello?” she answered, turning, so the frigid wind would be at her back.
“Helen, dear! How are you? This is Emily Cane, over here at Roman and Cane publishing. I have great news, my dear!”
Helen frowned, “Great… news?” she repeated the words, as if they were foreign.
“Yes! Your manuscript is accepted! We love it!” the woman sang.
“You do?” Helen face broke into a smile.
